HCN forms when synthetic fibers containing Orlon® or Acrilan® burn. Acrilan® has an empirical formula of CH2CHCN, so HCN is 50.9% of the formula by mass. A rug in the laboratory measures 12.0× 11.0 ft and contains 30.0 oz of Acrilan® fibers per square yard of carpet. If the rug burns, what mass of HCN will be generated in the room? Assume that the yield of HCN from the fibers is 20.0% and that the carpet is 39.0 % consumed.

Answer:

34.32 oz

Step-by-step explanation:

1.- The carpet has the dimension 12 x 11 ft, so it has an area = 12 x 11 = 132 ft2

To convert the Ft2 into yd2:

9 ft2 = 1 yd2

132 ft2 = x X = (132 x1) / 9 = 14.6 yd2

2.- By now, it is now that the 39 % is burned, so obtain the 39 % of 14.6 yd2

14.6 yd2 = 100 %

x = 39 % x = (39 x 14.6) / 100 = 5.72 yd2

3.- It is known that 30 oz acrylan /yd2

30 oz = 1 yd2

x = 5.72 yd2 X = (5.72 x 30) /1 = 171.6 oz

4.- It is assume that just the 20 % of the fibers has HCN

171.6 oz = 100 %

x = 20 % X = (20 x 171.6) /100 = 34.32 oz
