Matter: It can be anything which occupy space and has mass.

Example:Wood , stone etc.

Substance:It is a matter .If matter has specific composition and chemical properties .Then , the matter is called substance.

For example: elements such as mercury, sodium etc.

All substance can be matter but all matter can not be substance.

Substance can be identified by two physical properties:

1.Extensive property

2.Intensive property

1.Extensive property: That property which depend on the amount of substance such as mass, length , volume etc.

Intensive property: That property which does not depend on the amount of substance such as density, boiling point, melting point etc.

By observing these properties we can identify a sample of matter as substance.
