Besides of England, Spain and France, Portugal a had sent expeditions to explore North America. Netherlands also had sent naval companies to explore the Western Indias. Some of the explorations covered large portions of territory that after a time were not completely controlled. These areas where located in Amazon and the west region of North America.

Many of the territory claims were abandoned because maintaining controll was expensive because of the geography and eventually because of the raids of some tribes. Also, war between different imperial powers changed the ownership of some territories.
