let's recall that a whole is 1, so if we got a pizza cut into 8 parts, that means that the pizza is just 8/8 or namely 1 whole. Well Bill ate 1/8 of it and Carol ate 1/4, how much is left?

\bf \cfrac{8}{8}~-\stackrel{Bill}{\cfrac{1}{8}}-\stackrel{Carol}{\cfrac{1}{4}}\implies \stackrel{\textit{using an LCD of 8}}{\cfrac{(1)8-(1)1-(2)1}{8}}\implies \cfrac{8-1-2}{8}\implies \cfrac{5}{8}
