Hypertension (high blood pressure) is when there is an increased pressure in blood vessels due to thus very high pressure there is not enough blood flowing and exchanging in the heart.

Hypertension increases the workload that your already beating heart has to endure. If you have arteries that are thinner and not as flexible, this will cause the blood within those vessels to struggle to flow with ease thus making your heart work harder to pump blood. With this, over periods of time, this very aggressive increase in workload on the fragile heart results in the heart enlarging to keep up with the demands of the body. The heart is larger but much more inefficient. Meaning it decreases the amount of oxygen reaching your heart and the rest of your body.
