Explanation:

As the question says "the surface area" you must find the area that the solid figure occupies. In this order, you have to subtract the area between the 2 cubes. The surface are of the to cubes are:

1. The small is (4 x 4) x 6 = 96 in^2

2. The large is (15 x 10) x 2 + (7 x 10) x 2 + (15 x 7) x 2 = 650 in ^2

Then, you subtract the area that is no part of the surface area, in this case is, (4 x 4) x 2, becaise is 2 times (one of the small cube an one of the large).

So the surface area will be (650 + 96 -32) = 714 in^2
