Large Number Calculations

The US consumes an average of 5.77 million metric tons of bananas per year. There are 301 million people in the US and there are 1000 kg in 1 metric ton

Round answer (except last one) to three significant digits.
(1848576 with 3 SD's becomes 1850000 = 1 85E6)

How many kilogram of bananas are consumed per person in a year?

There are 2 more questions to go with this one. I need help with those as well but I have to get through this one first

Answer:

19.2 kg

Explanation:

Amount of Bananas consumed in US per year = 5.77 million metric tons

Since 1 million =
10^(6) and 1 metric ton = 1000 kg, we can write:

Amount of Bananas consumed in US per year =
5.77 * 10^(6) metric tons

Amount of Bananas consumed in US per year =
5.77 * 10^(6) * 1000 = 5.77 * 10^(9) kg

Number of people in US = 301 million =
301 * 10^(6)= 3.01 * 10^(8)

We have to find how many kilograms of bananas are consumed per person in 1 year in US. For this we have to divide the total amount of bananas eaten in US per year with total number of people in US, which will be:

(5.77 * 10^(9))/(3.01 * 10^(8)) \\\\ = 19.2

This means, 19.2 kilograms of bananas are eaten in US per person in a year.
