Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world, with a peak of about 8,840 meters above sea level. Dead Sea has the lowest point at 430 meters below sea level. What is the difference in elevation between Mount Everest and Dead Sea?

We can use simple thought of number line (a vertical one) to answer this.

Let the sea level be positioned at 0.

Hence

Mount Everest will be 8840 ABOVE, and Dead Sea would be 430 BELOW

So, that means mount everest will lie at +8840 and Dead Sea would lie at -430 (in the number line).

The difference in elevation is thus 8840 - (-430) = 8840 + 430 = 9270 m
