A battery has a terminal voltage of 5 volts when a current of 500 milliamps flows through it. The internal resistance of the battery is 5 ohms. Calculate E, the internal voltage (EMF), of the battery.

Current through the battery
i=500mA=0.5A

Internal resistance of the battery R = 5 ohm

For the any batter we know that
V=E+iR

Where V is terminal voltage E is EMF of the battery and R is the internal resistance

So
5=E+0.5* 5


E=5-2.5=2.5volts
