Explanation:

First we must calculate how many pencils we have, this will be the amount of pencils in each box times the number of boxes like this:.

15x5=75 pencils

To know how many pencils she can give to each student we will handle one at the time, if we give each student one pencil we would use 26 pencils this is lesser than 75, if we give each student 2 pencils we use 52 pencils (26x2=52) this is still lesser than 75, if we give each student 3 pencils we would use 78 pencils and this is bigger than 75 so it is not possible. this leads us to the conslusion that we can only give each student 2 pencils so all of them will have the same amount of pencils.

and if we use only 52 pencils out of the 75 we can find how many are left over by doing a simple substraction like this:

75-52=23 pencils

we have 23 pencils leftover
