Do what is in the parentheses first. 12-9, which is 3. Replace the number 3 where the parentheses are: 3 + 2 * 6 (3)

Multiplication comes next. 6 is being multiplied to the 3 so you multiply them. 3 + 2 (18)

The two is being multiplied to the eighteen. Now you have 3 + 36.

Add the three to get 39.
