“Sandwiched (or embedded) zeros, those between significant digits, are significant. Thus, 405 g has four significant figures. Leading zeros, which are zeros at the beginning of a decimal number less than 1, are not significant. In 0.000458 mL, the first four digits are leading zeros and are not significant.”

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

  • If the number is written in scientific notation, everything counts. For example 1.5540000 * 10^9 all numbers count. Answer 8 sig digs.
  • If the number is not written in scientific notation then left hand zeros may or may not count. It's a guessing game 34000 You really don't know until it is put in scientific notation.
  • If the number is a decimal between 0 and 1 then the numbers immediately after the decimal do not count. For example 0.00034 has two sig digs.
  • If the number is between 0 and 1 and there are after a known sig dig., then it depends on what you are told. For example 0.00045400 is a guess. There are at least three sig digs. 454. What you do with the last two zeros is a guess.
