Acceleration can be defined as the rate of change of velocity but the speed is just the magnitude of the velocity. Consider a situation in which change in velocity is smaller, then the acceleration in that situation is smaller as compare to when change in velocity is large.

Now take an example when the car is moving with a speed of 15 km/hr now the car accelerates, and the speed will become 30 km/hr in a given time.

Now take the same time which is take previously and accelerate again to the speed of 40 km/hr.

Therefore the change in velocity in the second case is relatively smaller than the change in the velocity in the first case in equal span of time.
