In crossover one chromatid from each X gets tangled up with the other X. While they are tangled up together, they trade sections of DNA; recombination. Each sex cell, resulting from meiosis, contains 1/4 of the DNA from the original. This allows each cell to contain different traits from various parts of the DNA.
