John and Mary Smith plan to put a wooden fence around their yard in order to keep the mean cats away from their dog Fido. There is a gate that is 3.13 m long which is not included as part of the length of the fence. What total length of fence is required to enclose a rectangular yard whose sides are 14.2 m and 21.6 m in length

Therefore,

The total length of the fence

= Perimeter of the rectangular yard - Length of the gate

or

= 2 ( Side of the yard + Length of the yard ) - Length of the gate

= 2 ( 14.2 + 21.6 ) - 3.13

= 71.6 - 3.13

or

The total length of the fence = 68.47 m
