A phone line runs east along a field of 1.8 miles in the north along the edge of the same field for 2.5 miles if the phone line cost 3500 per mile to install how much could’ve been saved if the phone line had been install diagonal across the field

The diagonal will be the hypotenunse of the triangle created of the rectangular field. Using pythagorean theorem, we can find the length of the diagonal given the other two legs are 1.8 and 2.5. Thus:

Let the diagonal be d, so,


1.8^2+2.5^2=d^2\\9.49=d^2\\d=√(9.49) \\d=3.08

Since, phone line cost 3500 per mile, 3.8 miles would cost:


3500*3.8=13,300 dollars

If installed along the edges, it would be 1.8 miles + 2.5 miles + 1.8 miles + 2.5 miles = 8.6 miles

So it would cost: 8.6 * 3500 = 30,100
