- take it into a dark room to maybe see any thing

Mostly the problem would be with the adjustment of the “brightness and contrast” value. I would help my friend to set a value of brightness and contrast value by using the button provided in the edge of the laptop or the short cut keys available in the keyboard. It is very similar to the settings which are done in television.

Even after changing if the monitor display is dim, then there is a hardware issue which needs to be trouble shooted by the system engineer. It might either be screen or monitor needs a change or brightness adjustment button may be faultier.
