So 4/6 are taller.

So to find the fraction of students that are shorter you subtract 4/6 from 6/6:


(6)/(6) - (4)/(6) = (2)/(6)

And the total number of students is 18. Then the equation is:


(2)/(6) = (y)/(18)

Simplify:


6y = 36

Divide 6 from both sides:


6 / 6y = 36 / 6

Simplify:


y = 6
