second number=y

so,

One number is 9 less than three times a second number

x=3y-9.........(2)

again,

the first number plus twice the second number is 16

so,x+2y=16.....(2)

now drop value of x from (1) to (2)

3y-9+2y=16

5y=25

y=5

then drop value of y=5 to (2)

x=3 . 5 -9

x=15-9

x=6
