Answer:

29/20

OR

1 and 9/20

Explanation:

When you add unlike fractions, you always want to make the denominators equal to each other.

Process:

Equation: 1/2 + 19/20

Find the greatest common denominator (the highest multiple of both denominators): 20

20 works because it is divisible by 20 (20/20 = 1) and it can be divided by 2 (20/2 = 10).

Now, multiply the numerator and denominator of both fractions:

1/2 turns into 10/20.

Because the denominator (2) needs to be multiplied by 10 to turn into 20, the same needs to be done to the numerator to make sure the fraction stays the same (1 * 10 = 10)

19/20 stays 19/20.

Since the denominator is already 20 (20 * 1 = 20), nothing changes for this fraction.

After that, simply add the fractions together!

10/20 + 19/20 = 29/20

*Answer could also be 1 and 9/20 (-> as a mixed fraction)

Hope this helps!
