-(3x+y)+2(x-4y)

Pretend that there is a -1 in front of the first bracket.

-1(3x+y)+2(x-4y)

Multiply the first bracket by -1

Multiply the second bracket by 2

(3x)(-1)(y)(-1)=-3x-y

(x)(2)(-4y)(2)=2x-8y

-3x-y+2x-8y

-3x+2x-y-8y

-x-9y

Answer: -x-9y
