A building in a city has a rectangular base. The length of the base measures 65 ft less than three times the width. The perimeter of this base is 950 ft. What are the dimensions of the base?

Let

x -----> the length of the base

y ----> the width of the base

we know that

The perimeter of the rectangular base is


P=2(x+y)\\P=950\ ft

so


950=2(x+y) -----> equation A


x=3y-65 -----> equation B

substitute equation B in equation A and solve for y


950=2(3y-65+y)


475=(4y-65)


4y=475+65


4y=540


y=135

Find the value of x


x=3(135)-65=340

therefore

The length of the base is 340 ft and the width of the base is 135 ft
