Answer: y=-3

Explanation:

First subtract 5 from 14. Now you have -2y + 5y on one side and 9 on the other. Like this -2y +5y = 9. Then add the two with the y’s together so now you have -3y = 9. Finally divide 3 from both 3y and 9. Now you are left with just -y=3. Now switch the negative to the 3 and now you have y = -3.

-2y+5+5y=14

-2y+5y+5=14 - rearranging ( combining like terms)

3y+5=14

Move +5 to the other side. Sign changes from +5 to -5.

3y+5-5=14-5

3y=9

Divide by 3 for both sides.

3y/3=9/3

Cross out 3 and 3, divide by 3 and then becomes y

y=3

Answer: y=3
