We have to:


5 \frac {3} {4} = \frac {4 * 5 + 3} {4} = \frac {20 + 3} {4} = \frac {23} {4}\\2 \frac {3} {4} = \frac {4 * 2 + 3} {4} = \frac {8 + 3} {4} = \frac {11} {4}

Rewriting the expression we have:


\frac {23} {4} + \frac {11} {4} = \frac {23 + 11} {4} = \frac {34} {4} = \frac {17} {2}
