Explanation:

49 can be factored as 7*7 = 7^2

x^2 - 49

= x^2 - 7^2

You also learned that a^2 - b^2 = (a-b) * (a+b), so in this case:

x^2 - 7^2 = (x-7) * (x+7)

So x^2 - 49 factored to become (x-7)*(x+7)
