James, Karen, and Lou are hiking. Lou forgot to bring any water. James brought 2 gallons of water and Karen brought 1 3/4 gallons of water. The three of them agree to divide all the water equally among them. Lou gives $2 for the water he receives, which James and Karen agree to divide fairly between the two of them. How much money should James receive?

Answer:

James will get $1.20.

Explanation:

We have been given that James brought 2 gallons of water and Karen brought 1 3/4 gallons of water.

First of all, we will find amount of water per person by dividing 2 gallons plus 1 3/4 (1.75) gallons by 3.

\text{Amount of water per person}=(2+1.75)/(3)

\text{Amount of water per person}=(3.75)/(3)

\text{Amount of water per person}=1.25

James will keep 1.25 gallons and given 0.75 gallon to Lou.

(0.75)/(1.25)* 100=(3)/(5)* 100=60\%

This means James gave 40% of Lou's water to him, so James will get 60% of $2.

(60)/(100)*\$2=0.60*\$2=\$1.20

Therefore, James will get $1.20.
