Non-renewable resources are resources that take a long time to "renew" or replace themselves once used. A common example is oil. It takes millions of years for oil to form, therefore once the supply is used all up years will have to go by before more can be used.

In contrast, renewable resources are resources that can be easily renewed. Normally these are natural things that have active roles in the environment. These include water, wind, sunlight, geothermal energy, etc.
