While civilization has brought many advantages and benefits to humankind, it has also brought some problems.

For example, one of the most important problems of civilization is that it usually leads to inequality. A large social group usually requires a strict organization in order to run smoothly. This requires some people to be in charge, and others to follow. Social hierarchies develop, and these have an enormous impact on how people live, usually leading to the existence of a "poor" class of people.

Another problem of civilization is that a large social group can often put pressures on resources. Civilization requires a large population to have access to water, food, entertainment, shelter, clothing, etc. This can present serious organizational and environmental challenges.

Finally, an important problem that results from civilization is that of disease. Communicable diseases can survive and spread better in close-knit, large communities. Therefore, the rise of large civilizations is necessary for the rise of epidemics.
