Fatty acid synthase is an enzyme complex with multiple domains with various enzymatic activities such as condensation, reduction, dehydration, etc.

For example, the enzyme has condensation (KS) activity it domain 1 which in turn catalyze the condensation of activated acetyl and malonyl group to form acetoacetyl-ACP.

Reduction of acetoacetyl ACP into D-beta-hydroxybutyryl-ACP is catalyzed by beta -ketoacyl-ACP reductase (KR) activity of fatty acid synthase.

Likewise, the enzyme complex also functions as dehydratase (DH) and reductase (ER) to catalyze the dehydration of beta-hydroxybutyryl-ACP and reduction of double bond respectively.
