Judy is an 11-year-old girl who is wonderful at playing the piano. However, she develops intense anxiety when she is asked to perform in front of others. Her fear of performing causes her great distress and limits her ability to participate in recitals. Interestingly, Judy does not experience anxiety in other social settings (e.g., parties, lunchtime). What DSM-5 disorder best describes Judy’s behavior?

Answer: Social anxiety disorder

Explanation: This disorder is characteristic of individuals who have fears that they will show behavior in front of others that is possible shameful, that is, such individuals have a knack for presenting what they know in front of others. Because of this feeling of tightness that they will show something shameful, they experience anxiety and the potentials of these individuals are greatly diminished in front of others, i.e. unknown people. That is why such individuals feel much more relaxed in front of familiar people, as in the family or in acquaintances.
