Use the periodic table to give the name and symbol for each of the following elements:

(a) the noble gas in the same period as germanium
(b) the alkaline earth metal in the same period as selenium
(c) the halogen in the same period as lithium
(d) the chalcogen in the same period as cadmium

Answer: According to the periodic table we can find this: a) Krypton (Kr); b) Calcium (Ca); c) Fluorine (F); d) Tellurium (Te)

Explanation: All derives from the name that the periodic table groups have. For the VIIIA Group, they named the Noble Gases. For the IIA Group, we can call them, the alkaline earth metals. For the VIIA Group, it calls Halogens. Finally, for the VIA Group, we call it the Chalcogens.

After knowing that, we just go to the periodic table and look for those elements in the same row (period) as the Germanium, Selenium, Lithium and Cadmium

Answer:

For a: The noble gas in the same period as germanium is Krypton.

For b: The alkaline earth metal in the same period as selenium is Calcium.

For c: The halogen in the same period as lithium is Fluorine.

For d: The chalcogen in the same period as cadmium is Tellurium.

Step-by-step explanation:

Periods are the horizontal lines in a periodic table.

  • For a:

Noble gases are the elements which are present in group 18 of the periodic table.

Germanium is present in Period 4 of the periodic table.

So, the noble gas in the same period as germanium is Krypton.

  • For b:

Alkaline earth metals are the elements which are present in group 2 of the periodic table.

Selenium is present in Period 4 of the periodic table.

So, the alkaline earth metal in the same period as selenium is Calcium.

  • For c:

Halogen are the elements which are present in group 17 of the periodic table.

Lithium is present in Period 2 of the periodic table.

So, the halogen in the same period as lithium is Fluorine.

  • For d:

Chalcogen are the elements which are present in group 16 of the periodic table.

Cadmium is present in Period 4 of the periodic table.

So, the chalcogen in the same period as cadmium is Tellurium.
