Solve these problems about lumber dimensions.

(a) To describe to a European how houses are constructed in the US, the dimensions of " Two-by- four" lumber must be converted into metric units. The thickness x width x Length dimensions are 1.50 in. x 3.50 in. x8.00 ft in the US. What are the dimensions in cm x cm xm?
(b) This lumber can be used as vertical studs, Which are typically placed 16.0 in. a part. What is that distance in centimeters?

Answer :

(a) The dimensions in
cm* cm* m are,
3.81cm* 8.89cm* 2.4384m

(b) The distance in centimeters is, 40.64 cm

Explanation :

(a) The conversion used :

1in=2.54cm

and,

1feet=0.3048m

As we are given the thickness, width, length dimensions in inches, inches and feet respectively.

Now we have to determine the thickness, width, length dimensions in centimeter, centimeter and meter respectively.

1.50in* 3.50in* 8.00ft

\Rightarrow 1.50in* ((2.54cm)/(1in))* 3.50in* ((2.54cm)/(1in))* 8.00ft* ((0.3048m)/(1feet))

\Rightarrow 3.81cm* 8.89cm* 2.4384m

The dimensions in
cm* cm* m are,
3.81cm* 8.89cm* 2.4384m

(b) The conversion used :

1in=2.54cm

As we are given the distance in inches. Now we have to determine the distance in centimeter.

16.0in

\Rightarrow 16.0in* ((2.54cm)/(1in))

\Rightarrow 40.64cm

The distance in centimeters is, 40.64 cm
