x + y = 46
x is six more than four times the value of y
so replace x with that
6+4y + y = 46
add
4y+y=5y
so
6+5y=46
subtract 6 from both sides to remove the 6 in the left.
5y = 40
Divide both sides by 5, the coefficient of y. 5y/5=y and 40/5=8

\text{\boxed{y\=8}}

Therefore
(4y+6) +y = 46

We can combine the like terms:
5y + 6 = 46

Subtract 6 on both sides:

5y+6-6=46-6

Therefore 5y =40

Divide by 5 on both sides

5y/5 = 40/5

Therefore

y= 8
We found y but to find the value x we use y.

X= 4y+6

Therefore
x= (4*8)+ 6

Therefore

x= 32 + 6

x= 38.
