An antimicrobial agent is the agent which is capable of killing the microorganisms and they are capable of stopping their growth. The antibiotics are the specific for killing the bacteria and antifungal agents for infecting fungal colonies. To be more specific the agents which are used to kill the microbes are the microbicidal and those which can inhibit their growth are biostatic.

The antimicrobial agent come from natural sources such as plant products such as herbs, spices, fruits, vegetables, seeds and leaves. These have secondary metabolites which are able to kill these microbes in the host body.
