Samantha, Cleo, and Elena had $780 altogether. Samantha had $40 more than Cleo, and Cleo had twice as much money as Elena. How much money did Cleo have?

To solve this we can create an equation in which we will solve for X. Because according to the question Elena had the least amount of money we will make her X and everything else is based of her amount of money. Cleo had twice as much as Elena making him 2X and Samantha and 40 more than Cleo making her 2X+40. Because the total is 780 our equation will be

X+2X+2X+40=780 we can combine like terms to get 5X+40=780 then isolate the variable 5X=740 and divide both sides by 5 to get what X is 740/5=148 so Elena had $148 and because Cleo had twice as much as Elena we need to fine 2X which is 2 times 148 which is $296
