we have

set of data
[6, 8, 1, 9,4]

step 1

Find the mean

Adds the values and divide by the number of values


[6+8+1+9+4]/5=28/5=5.6

step 2

for each number: subtract the Mean and square the result


(6-5.6)^(2)=0.16\\ (8-5.6)^(2)= 5.76\\ (1-5.6)^(2)= 21.16\\ (9-5.6)^(2)= 11.56\\ (4-5.6)^(2)= 2.56

step 3

work out the mean of those squared differences


[0.16+5.76+21.16+11.56+2.56]/5=41.2/5=8.24 ----> this value is called the "Variance"
