The number is greater than –3.
Its opposite is negative.
The number is the same distance from –1 and from 5.

So we can find this from a little deductive reasoning

Greater than -3 and its opposite is negative so it’s a positive number. And it’s also the same unit distance from -1 and 5 so that’s think a positive number and it’s in between a total distance of 6 numbers and the end points use two if the six spots so we are left with 4 and half of 4 is 2 so let’s try the number 2.

2 is greater than -1
2 has an opposite that’s negative, -2
2 is 3 units from -1 and 3 units from 5 so all checks out and we have our answer.
