A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of any of the urinary tract structures: kidneys, ureter, bladder, or urethra. Considering the differences in the male and female anatomy and that the bacteria that cause UTIs are often found in the feces, explain why females are more likely to contract a UTI.

Women more often get infections like urinary tract infections as compared to men because the bacteria can easily reach bladder in case of women more easily than the men. The urethra in women is shorter than in men, so bacteria have to travel a shorter distance.

Urethra is located near rectum in women. Bacteria from rectum can easily travel up urethra and cause many infections.

In women, having sex also cause infections in the urinary tract because the bacteria can be easily pushed into the urethra.
