I'm taking this to mean

4 = 2(x - 1)^2

4 = 2(x^2 - 2x + 1)

4 = 2x^2 - 4x + 2

2x^2 - 4x - 2 = 0

x^2 - 2x - 1 = 0

What you get from here is sqrt(2) as one of the roots.

That is not nearly an answer.

4 = 4(x -1)

4 = 4x - 4

8 = 4x

x = 8/4

x = 2

That makes C the answer.
