There were 683 tickets purchased for a major league baseball game. The general admission tickets cost ​$6.50 and the upper reserved tickets cost ​$8.00. The total amount of money spent was ​$5021.50. How many of each kind of ticket were​ purchased

295 general admission tickets and 388 upper reserved tickets were purchased.

Explanation:

Let the number of general admission tickets be = x

Let the number of upper reserved tickets be = y

In total there were 683 tickets sold.

So, we get
x+y=683 ........(1)

The general admission tickets cost ​$6.50 and the upper reserved tickets cost ​$8.00 and total amount of money spent was ​$5021.50.

So, we have another equation:


6.50x+8y=5021.50 ......(2)

Multiplying (1) by 8 and subtracting (2) from (1), we get;


1.50x=422.5

x = 295

And
x+y=683

So,
295+y=683


y=683-295

y = 388

So, 295 general admission tickets and 388 upper reserved tickets were purchased.
