In an effort to loosen the bolt on the wheel of a car, a man with a mass of 90 kg steps on the end of a 70-cm tire iron which is extending horizontally from the bolt (Effectively exerting a force equal to his weight). How much torque is he applying to the bolt?

Answer:

617.4 Nm

Step-by-step explanation:

m = mass of the man stepping on the end of tire iron = 90 kg

g = acceleration due to gravity acting on the man = 9.8 m/s²

Weight of the man is given as

W = mg

Inserting the values

W = (90) (9.8)

W = 882 N

r = radius of tire iron extending horizontally = 70 cm = 0.70 m

τ = Torque applied on the bolt due to weight of man

Torque applied on the bolt is given as

τ = r W

τ = = (0.70) (882)

τ = 617.4 Nm
