A student took an exam in French and math. In French, she scored 81 and in math 86. The overall results on the French exam had a mean of 72 and a standard deviation of 9, while the mean math score was 68, with a standard deviation of 12. On which exam did she do better, as compared with other students?

Any point (x) from a normal distribution can be converted to the standard normal distribution (z) with the formula z=


(x-mean)/(Standard deviation)

for french x = 81 and mean 72 ,standard deviation = 9

for french the value of Z =
((x-mean))/(Standard deviation)

=
(81-72)/(9)

= ±1

For math x =86 and mean=68 ,standard deviation = 12

for math the value of z
(68-86)/(12) =±1.5

Since value of Z is more in subject math as compare to that of French

so she did better in Mathematics
