in "a" we need sides of the right triangle that form the right angle which are:

the common side with the rectangle is 140-50=90 cm

and the other side is 180-110=70 cm

the area of the right triangle is (90*70)/2=3150
cm^(2)

and the area of the rectangle is 110*140=1540
cm^(2)

and if you add them you get 18550
cm^(2) which is the overall area

in "b" you should use the Pythagorean theorem in the triangle ADE and find the side DE


AD^(2)=AE^(2)+AE^(2) ===> DE=\sqrt{10^(2)-6^(2)} =√(64) =8\\

the area of ADE triangle is:

(8*6)/2=24

the area of ABEC square is:

8*8=64

and if you add them both you get:

64+24=88
