A map shows World War II in the Pacific. Yellow arrows indicate the years in which Allied forces pushed west from island to island to reach Japan. In 1942, Japan occupied many islands in the South Pacific Ocean including Marshall Islands, Gilbert Islands, Guam, Mariana Islands, Wake Island, Iwo Jima, New Britain, New Guinea, Celebes, Philippines, Java, and Sumatra, plus the mainland countries of French Indochina, Thailand, Burma, and Manchuria. Each of these regions was attacked and controlled by the Allied forces.
