Zoe and Nora each have a pail with a small

amount of water in it. Each girl slowly begins
to add water to her pail. The table describes the
cups of water y in Zoe's pail as a linear
function of the time x that she spends filling it.
The graph describes the cups of water as a
function of time that Nora spends filling her
pail. Is Zoe or Nora filling her pail at a faster
rate? Explain.

Answer:

Zoe's pail is filling faster

Explanation:

We can find the slope for the table

m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

= (7.5-5.7)/ (3-2)

=1.8/1

= 1.8 cups / minute

We can find the slope for the line

( 1,4)( 3,7)

m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

= (7-4)/(3-1)

=3/2

=1.5 cups/ minute

The table is filling faster (1.8 > 1.5)

Zoe's pail is filling faster
