At the city museum, child admission is $5.20 and adult admission $9.70. On Tuesday, 135 tickets were sold for a total sales of $940.50. How many child tickets were sold that day?

Explanation:

Let the number of adults be x

the number of children be y

hence

total number of admission = 135

hence x+y=135

x=135-y -------------(I)

Also

cost of one adult ticket = 9.7 and that of one child ticket = 5.2

Hence total cost =

9.7x+5.2y=940.5 -------------(II)

substituting x=135-y from (I) in (II)

9.7(135-y)+5.2y=940.5

1309.50 - 9.7y + 5.2y=940.50

1309.50-940.50=9.7y-5.2y

369=4.5y

y=82

Hence x = 135-82

x=53

Hence there were 53 adults and 82 children
