Answer: Odds against rolling a sum of 3 = 17:1

Explanation:

On rolling a pair of dice,

Total number of outcomes = 6 × 6 = 36

Outcomes with a sum of 3:

there is only 2 outcomes whose sum is 3, that is, (1,2) and (2,1)

∴ Favorable outcome = 2

Unfavorable outcome = 34

Odds against refers to the ratio of unfavorable outcomes to the favorable outcomes

so,

odds against rolling a sum of 3 =
(unfavorable\ outcomes)/(favorable\ outcomes)

=
(34)/(2)

= 17:1
