One positive integer is 1 less than another. The product of two integers is 71. What are the integers? Separate the answers with a comma.

Explanation:

Let the integers be x and x-1

then

x(x-1)=71

x^2-x-71=0

Solving the above quadratic equation by quadratic formula gives:

x=
\frac{-b\sqrt{b^(2)-4ac } }{2a}

x=
\frac{\sqrt{1^(2)-4(1)(-71) } }{2}

x= 8.94 and x=-7.94

as given, integer is positive so taking

x=8.94

x-1= 7.94

Hence the two integers are= 8.94 and 7.94!
