they did not secure it by themselves, and in the end the colony is a failed learning experience and not a success. they relied upon the powhatan native americans for food because the colony was created for money and they had no survival/agricultural plan for sustaining life.

The colonists, the first group of whom had originally arrived on May 13, 1607, had never planned to grow all of their own food. Their plans depended upon trade with the local Powhatan to supply them with food between the arrivals of periodic supply ships from England.
