The force exerted by the wind on the sails of a sailboat is 390 N north. The water exerts a force of 180 N east. If the boat (including its crew) has a mass of 270 kg, what are the magnitude and direction of its acceleration? Serway, Raymond A.; Jewett, John W.. Answer:

Acceleration= 1,59 (meters/(second^2))

Direction= NE; 65,22° above the east direction.

Step-by-step explanation:

Resulting force= ( ((180N)^2) + ((390N)^2) ) ^ (1/2) = 429,53 N

Angle obove the east direction= ((cos) ^ (-1)) (180N / 429,53 N) = 65,22°

Acceleration= Resulting force / mass = (429,53 N) / (270 kg) =

= (429,53 kg × (meters/(second^2))) / (270kg) = 1,59 (meters/(second^2))
